Post-Century blues preview makes grade

Steamy youth sets burn bluesfest crowd

And 22-year-old Shawn Pittman of Dallas picked his way through a marathon set that showcased his older-than-his-age voice and cutting-edge guitar work.

The crowd didn't get a chance to catch its breath before Pittman picked up on the festival's other stage. The latest in a string of hot, young blues guitarists, Pittman takes no back seat to anyone on the road today--including Lang or Corey Steven or Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Pittman's debut CD is "Burnin' Up," and that's what he was doing through "Dallas City Police" and "Working Man."

In "Trouble Comes Around," it was clear that the Vaughan brothers are a Pittman influence. But it's not a copycat sound. Instead Pittman has built his own style based on their classic licks.

While Pittman appears to be a much too pretty face for the blues (his autograph line was laced with more than a few teenage girls), there's no doubting the blues heritage in his work.
