Burnin' Up -- CD Review

August, 1998

SHAWN PITTMAN'S debut, Burnin' Up starts off like any good Texas blues revue--with a bang. The opening uptempo instrumental shuffle "Night Stomp" quickly establishes the kid's chops factor. And what did you expect" In Texas, the land of blues guitar slingers, you gotta deal. Pittman further establishes his empathy for a deep blues feeling on the slow blues "Times Are Slow" and the distinctly Albert King influenced "You Sure Drive A Hard Bargain." A graduate of the Dallas bar band scene, Pittman mixes in danceable funk ("Dallas City Police") with raucous boogies (a suitably raw rendition of Hound Dog Taylor's "Gimme Back My Wig"). A Chuck Berry-ish rock flavor comes across on his revved-up original "Trouble Come Around." And he scores big on shuffles like " Watch Out, Baby" and "Yes, She Does" and a faithful cover of the Michael Bloomfield/Nick Gravenities tune "Working Man." Chops plus soul equals dynamite.
